Girls Rugby Festival
15/07/2010

Secondary Girls Rugby

With the lead to the Women’s Rugby World Cup which is happening in Surrey, UK towards the end of 2010 we held our own Women’s Rugby festival at Tudhoe Grange with 5 secondary schools and 8 teams.

The event was organized by the SSP and heavily supported by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) who we have a great relationship with. Adam Falkner from the RFU provided each secondary school in the partnership with taster Rugby sessions in Girls Active week and due to the success and interest during the sessions we provided organized a tournament to show off there newly learnt skills.

The festival was a great success with four RFU staff providing intensive coaching sessions when the students arrived in; Tag Rugby tactics / Ball Handling / Contact / Rule awareness. Following these sessions the girls played against every team in a Tag Rugby event.

The competition was extremely close and the girls showed superb fair play. The scores on the day brought Greenfield A team out on top with Tudhoe B as runners up and Spennymoor came in 3rd place. Spennymoor also went home with the Fair Play award.

Other awards on the day went to;

Bethany Clayton (Tudhoe) – Top Effort

Rachel Layfield-Carroll (Greenfield A) – Best Footwork

Most Inspiring Award went to Laura Cruddace (Greenfield B) who took home a England Team Women’s World Cup Shirt!

All the students went home with a RFU goodie bag with signed postcards, information about how to access local clubs, pens and posters. Thank you very much to the RFU for providing these.

A great event and we look forward to another Girls Rugby Festival for both Yr 7/8 and Yr 9/10 in September!
